experimental performer/composer

positioning

6 months have passed and i’ve been (paradoxically) up to a lot of things but also nothing really at all.

there is a bunch of new bits on my soundcloud/sounds page which has come out of some real desperation to make things. i’m having the same sort of crisis that i had in the last post (i haven’t really got out of it to be honest) where i really feel ill at ease at my lack of making things, so will make quick little things for soundcloud but then i won’t be satisfied with what i’ve made and the feeling continues.

i even made a big ol piece called positions which i’m pretty happy with. i had the pleasure of being invited to perform at post-paradise in the hague, and thought i’d make some nice new things for it, so watch out for some documentation of that soon. I also managed to shoehorn a performance of it into coda but anyway, even by making that. that feeling didn’t leave so i’m not sure what the issue is. i think this whole phd thing is just very open and freeing and im struggling to nail my creative self down to my productive self at the same and making them co-operate.

which brings me to this week.

this week is my first week in actual residence in stan’s cafe. i have a nice little office which i share with three masssssive spiders, a couple of dead woodlice and a handful of old gym equipment.

my desk that im typing this on is an old vaulting horse haha. its quaint. but being here at a regular time everyday has really helped me get things done. i’m not just pottering around the house and then see my guitar and get distracted playing math rock covers for 2 hours and then make my own tune with that tuning for 20 minute and whack that on soundcloud. although now i’ve said that, that doesn’t sound like a horrendous way to work.

therapy really is probably what i need. 🤷‍♂️

so this week at stan’s cafe i haven’t had any really pressing tasks so ive just been making video diary things of the things i did/want to do in my office.

here is a little playlist of them here if you are interested in that.

the big issue is just trying to work out how all of this is impacting/relating to/helping stan’s cafe.

but it is early days yet, but being here has been nice and i’m looking forward to the future.

just a quick summary of some other things, tanna chamberlain and leon trimble have joined me as the first graduates from the experimental performance mmus course! big congrats to them and its been a real pleasure learning things with them and from them and sharing in all the goodtimes and bad times.

tanna and i killed our performance supporting personal clutter at iklektik back in februrary (this picture is from that gig and taken by the immensely talented dimitri djuric)

ive realised at this point that i made like a list of things to talk about in this post and i haven’t even looked at it once. whoops.

oh the fargion’s put on an absolutely incredible concert called good company at patchworks in london and invited flxnflx and it was bloody incredible, going to be hard to top that vibe for a while.

okay this has lost all momentum im ducking out.

going to aim for a monthly (at least quaterly) blog post from now on. au revoir
