graduating and other new noises

ello. hope you good. big update is ive graduated from my masters in experimental performance. what a lovely time. feeling a bit burned out but thought now would be a good time to catch up on what I’ve been doing and have got happening in the near future.

first up, thanks to all me fellow students and tutors for all the help during a difficult two years, especially because of the pandemic making it a little difficult to do the things we wanted to.

if you have found this website/blog thing because you are interested in doing the course, definitely have a chat with me (send an email or dm on the socials) about if it would work for you, and definitely talk to michael wolters about it. it has really helped me think more critically about how i make things and understand my decision making for creating art/music, which is exactly what i needed two years ago i think. although i think my work has taken a sort of shift in style that i’m not wholly comfortable with yet, but i think this is because of the pandemic shifting how we all have to do things.

so what now?

well i mentioned in my last post about forming some duos, so I should maybe talk about those. and i want to now. because they good and exciting.

first up, i’ve made an improv duo called egnairio with the impeccable ray brien. we played some stuff before the pandemic together and had a really great time, then during the improvisation livestreams i did we found playing with each other online was like eating the baby bear’s porridge, and just hit the spot. so we kept it going and made an album of little miniatures. we like it. we will be playing more in person soon when it is a little easier to do so…

i also featured on a little e.p by the inevitable marco caricola, who transformed some nonsense i sent him into some gorgeously dark and unstable music. ray also features along with some other banging chaps.

flxnflx is another new duo formed with my beautiful friend maya-leigh rosenwasser. we formed in a similar story to egnairio, except we never met in person until june 2021, but formed together a bit in like autumn 2020. so thats cool . we do alot of things in yellow and orange and are trying to challenge what we do as musicians and work out something new, and a little queer.

I also made an opera with the incredible alexander kaniewski about a empty tin can trying to find his contents and meaning of life. it was bloody tough work, making the whole thing within five weeks, but alex has this vision for making things that makes it easier than most. v proud of a couple of the musical moments on there too.

so yes. there are some things here. making more music and throwing it on soundcloud which is real fun tbh. i find i make music by just like, not working it out at all. i just throw things down, and dont edit things. then just throw more on top of it, very rarely deleting/leaving things out. then just doing some simple mixing and uploading and most of the time I’m pretty happy with the results.

other news is I’m starting a phd in october working with stan’s cafe. thats all I’ll say for now on that. until i have some results worth talking about, i’m sure I’ll write up some things from that in the future.

so this isn’t that interesting, just a spew dump of updates, but i feel bad sitting on them and not putting them up here.

keep making and doing and encourage others to do the same. feeling fatigued and sometimes some nice words from ya friends is all i need to get making things again.
